New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
