This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
