The BBC engaged in a "serious breach" of media regulations by failing to disclose that the narrator of a film about the Gaza situation was the offspring of a Hamas official, as ruled by UK media regulator Ofcom.
An probe by Ofcom into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has determined that the documentary was "materially misleading".
The head of the BBC had previously apologised, stating there had been "a significant failing in relation to accuracy".
The authority has ordered the BBC to broadcast a peak-time statement about its findings.
"Given this constitutes a serious breach of our rules, we are instructing the broadcaster to transmit a statement of our conclusions against it on BBC2 at 9pm, with a schedule to be determined," the regulator stated.
'Potential to Undermine Credibility'
The watchdog's announcement stated: "The inquiry we conducted found that the documentary's lack of disclosure that the presenter's male guardian occupied a position in the Hamas-run authority was substantially inaccurate.
"This implied that the public did not have vital facts which may have been very significant to their assessment of the presenter and the details he provided.
"Trust is at the heart of the relationship between a broadcaster and its viewers, especially for a state-funded media outlet such as the BBC.
"This oversight had the potential to damage the very considerable levels of credibility that audiences would have placed in a documentary produced by the BBC about the conflict in Gaza."
The programme was removed from the online platform in last February after the presenter's familial connections came to light, and in the month of July an corporation's own inquiry found it violated the broadcaster's content policies on truthfulness.
A corporation official commented: "The authority's determination is in accordance with the results of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a major oversight in the programme in relation to the broadcaster's journalistic policies on accuracy, which reflects Rule 2.2 of Ofcom's Broadcasting Code.
"We issued an apology for this and we accept the authority's determination in complete. We will comply with the sanction as soon as the schedule and wording are finalised."
