Former President Trump has stated that American forces hit a "significant facility" in the South American country last week. However, the former president did not specify the exact nature or location of the target, and officials have issued no additional clarification from his camp.
Vague Comments Made During a Radio Show
"We just knocked out – I'm not sure if you read – they have a large facility, where the vessels come from. The other night, we took it out. So we targeted them very hard," Trump allegedly told Republican donor and supermarket owner John Catsimatidis in a recent interview.
Potential Significance of a Confirmed Attack
If a American strike were to be confirmed, it would represent the initial land strike since the Pentagon began a expansion of American strike forces in the region to disrupt narco-trafficking operations that the Trump administration asserts operate under the direction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
This stated purpose of the military buildup has evolved into a blockade aimed at disrupting the nation's crude oil shipments.
Online Video and Official Statements
Trump has for some time stated that American military units are prepared to widen the military campaign by hitting targets within Venezuela, a strategy that would theoretically require congressional authorization.
A clip posted on social media on 24 December appeared to show an detonation allegedly from an industrial area in a Venezuelan state. But, the footage or the facility has not been confirmed by third parties.
An official from Trump's team reportedly informed a media outlet that the former president was referring to a drug facility in his comments.
Response and Current Military Posture
The Caracas administration has not commented on the event Trump referenced. Additionally, there have been no corroborating news from within the country regarding it.
The buildup of US military in the area – a posture some have referred to as a maritime "quarantine" – constitutes the most expansive maritime enforcement action of Trump's presidency.
Administration officials have refrained from calling the action as a full blockade, but have stated that around 15,000 service members are deployed across the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, including a carrier strike group, F-35 aircraft, and Coast Guard cutters to uphold current economic sanctions.
