A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
